Backgrounds

(1)

In Japan, amid a rising trend to promote a recycling-oriented society, the Home Appliance Recycling Law, which came into effect in 2001, will be revised as early as in 2008. In prospect of the increase in the recycling ratio, home electrical appliance manufacturers are developing applications for the relevant used home electrical appliances (TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines) in order to recycle them.

(2)

Sekisui Plastics Co., Ltd. has worked aggressively on the recycling of expandable polystyrene since long before. Recently, it established technology and successfully put it into practical use to produce expandable polystyrene beads; not only from expandable polystyrene but also polystyrene base recycling materials extracted from electronic waste.

The use of the “EPS molded article made from the waste of household appliances” as packaging materials for home electrical appliances must significantly contribute to the establishment of a closed recycle system, which circulates as follows:
home electrical appliances >> consumers >> scrapping >> electronic waste processing plant >> “electronic waste recycling expandable polystyrene molded articles” >> packaging materials of home electrical appliances.
